Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for new teaching buildings at a college revealed that numerous artefacts had been found in the immediate vicinity. Roman coins and a Roman burial ground had been recorded within 200m of the site. Within a 500m radius, Mesolithic and Bronze Age flints, evidence of Iron Age occupation and further Roman artefacts had been found, and a post-medieval ice house had been recorded. Prehistoric and Roman sites had also been recorded in the wider surrounding area, and a Saxon cemetery had been excavated within 1km of the site. It was concluded that the site had a high archaeological potential, particularly in those areas where development had not previously occurred. Trial trenching was recommended. [AIP] |
