Abstract:
The construction of a new development at Pudding Chare presented the opportunity to excavate in one of Newcastle's earliest recorded streets. An earlier evaluation of the site had shown that stratified medieval deposits had survived on the eastern fringe of the site. Modern disturbances were extensive, but the excavation uncovered structural remains and occupation layers dating from the 12th up to the 16th century. Fronting onto Pudding Chare was a stone-built structure and associated light industrial features dating from the 12th century. This building showed evidence of several rebuilds along the same frontage with Pudding Chare. Adjacent to Rosemary Lane, a well dating from the 15th to 16th century was recorded. [Au(abr)]
