Abstract: |
An archaeological appraisal of a proposed transport link for Portsmouth, Gosport and Fareham in Hampshire was undertaken. The study indicated the presence of important sites of prehistoric, Roman and medieval date. In addition, there were significant post-medieval remains relating to the naval and military history of Gosport and Portsmouth. The archaeological contents of the shoreline and sea bed in this part of Portsmouth Harbour were unquantified, but were regarded as being a potentially important resource. The scheme was determined as having a generally very low impact due to its usage of existing infrastructure and earlier rail transport corridors. A high impact would occur to the waterfront and sea bed zones of archaeological potential and further work and mitigation was recommended. [Au(adp)] |
