Abstract: |
Two trial pits were fully investigated. The northern pit revealed the edge of a probable former channel of the River Fleet at 6.59m below current ground level, which cartographic evidence suggested ran northwest-southeast across the site until sometime towards the end of the 18th century. The southern pit contained no channel deposits, which suggested that the channel ran quite acutely northwest-southeast across the site. Both trial pits contained deep deposits (2.5-3.5m) of made ground, overlying the channel silt in TP1 and the natural clay (located at 5.99m below ground level, 6.73 OD) in TP2 and dated as 17th-18th century. This was probably related to the initial development and construction on the site. The 17th-18th century made ground was overlain by 2m of 19th-20th century construction debris in TP1 and was truncated by a probable 19th century basement in TP2. The original (abandoned) position of Trial Pit 1 also indicated that basements existed in the northwestern part of the site. [Au(abr)] |
