Abstract: |
Building recording and a watching brief were undertaken at the St. Andrew's Church community centre, Pershore (HWCM 5409), following fire damage to the medieval roof of the south aisle. The roof was charred, but the principal timbers of the frame survived substantially intact. Material losses were limited to plasterwork, roofing battens and the peg tile roofing. Recording work was undertaken after the roof was temporarily covered with weatherproof sheeting, but prior to repair works. A measured survey was made of the whole south aisle roof to establish overall proportions and the form of the timber framing. The record made of the roof structure demonstrated the way in which the roof pitch had been lowered following an increase in the span some time in the 19th century. Where possible carpenters' assembly marks were recorded, but being shallowly inscribed they were frequently obscured by charring.[AIP] |
