Abstract: |
A test pit was excavated following the submission of a planning application for the construction of an extension within the boundary of the medieval Abbey precinct. An undated dump of industrial material had been deposited immediately above the mortar surface, the presence of coke from which indicated a post-medieval or modern date. A sandy silt containing fragments of lime mortar overlay this. The mortar surface was truncated by a linear cut at the northern end of the test pit which contained large sub-angular limestone fragments similar to the local building stone, and fragments of post-medieval brick. The cut may have been a back-filled robber trench or a modern service trench. Contexts [5] (which contained modern pot and tile) and [2], probable garden soils, sealed each of the deposits and features described above. [Au(adp)] |
