Abstract:
Three trenches were opened during the evaluation. Natural brickearth was revealed in the northernmost trench only, overlying the natural terrace gravels that were revealed in the other two trenches. All three trenches contained prehistoric features. The northernmost trench revealed five pits, three of which were suggestive of a fence line. The middle trench revealed a shallow ditch and a cluster of three pits, while the southernmost trench also revealed a possible shallow ditch. Two fragments of Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age pottery and ten fragments of undatable struck flint were recovered, from these features. Overlying this was a plough-soil deposit containing struck flint, which was covered by buried soil dating to the post-medieval period. A number of 19th and 20th century walls and surfaces completed the depositional sequence. [Au]
