Abstract:
<summary>An evaluation was undertaken to investigate the survival of the defences on the north side of the city. Two parts of the wall recorded were already scheduled as ancient monuments. The survey revealed the absence of a plinth, and a blocked shallow arch, possibly a culvert, in the wall. A new section of walling was revealed behind the rendering on the rear wall of Bath Cottage. Variations in the line of the wall and the location and elevated position of North Walls House suggest that an interval tower, known to exist between Rack Alley and Foregate Street, was in its immediate vicinity if not directly beneath it. The evaluation suggested that the wall was founded directly onto natural sands and gravels. No foundation trench survived on the north side of the wall, probably due to refurbishment of the defences in the Civil War. The ditch was also observed for the first time on the north side of the city, here separated from the wall by a berm over 5.5m wide. The fill of the ditch was post-medieval in date, suggesting that it had been largely levelled by the end of the 17th century. {italon}Sec(abr)(21c){italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} HWCM11233
