Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out on the erection of a new accommodation block for the Southampton Institute. The site lay opposite St Mary's Church in what was the southern part of the Middle-Saxon town of Hamwic. The service trenches revealed pits and other features. Five pits produced Middle-Saxon pottery, one pit produced a copper alloy strap end with high silver content and another contained much antler and bone offcuts. A number of pits contained local and imported medieval pottery dating from the 12th to 14th centuries. Prehistoric evidence was also found including burnt and worked flint flakes. The site was probably intensely occupied during the Middle-Saxon period with both domestic and industrial activity being carried out. [Au(abr)]
