Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring of groundworks associated with the insertion of an upper floor within the tower at St Mary's Church revealed evidence for raising of the floor levels within the tower. The imported material contained 18th and 19th century rubble suggesting that at least one phase of this raising of levels was associated with Victorian restoration work. A buried surface was recorded but its exact nature was unknown. A small block of brickwork and the base of a narrow brick wall were also recorded. Drainage work in the churchyard was the subject of a watching brief which revealed part of the exterior of late vault and other cuts for deeper graves. Some fragments of medieval worked stone were recovered from the topsoil but no significant archaeological deposits were recorded. [Au(abr)] |
