Abstract: |
A field evaluation was carried out in advance of a site redevelopment. The site was bounded to the south and the east by the extant graveyard around St. Mary's Church. The evaluation trenches revealed at least thirteen features that appeared to be graves. The burials examined all appeared to have been supine and there was no evidence to suggest the use of a coffin; all were orientated roughly east-west, which indicated that they were most probably Christian burials associated with the Church. Some of the graves could have dated as early as the 13th century and some to the late 15th century and dating was difficult due to the probability that some associated finds were residual. The burials were likely to have been part of the original churchyard boundary, the shape of which had changed over the years. Two post-medieval ditches were also revealed. [Au(adp)] |
