Abstract:
A watching brief was undertaken during excavations associated with the modification of a 17th century and later manor house, which was refurbished as part of a residential development. Evaluation of the area proposed for new housing had revealed evidence of extensive disturbance, and a robbed wall. During the watching brief, it was observed that the area immediately to the rear of the main house had been much disturbed by the creation and removal of Victorian extensions. However, excavations for new foundations for a replacement wall revealed the footings of the former wall, which were composed in one area of large chalk blocks of well moulded door and window openings. These clearly derived from a substantial medieval building, probably part of the documented manor buildings which had pre-dated the 17th century house. It was concluded that the medieval buildings were likely to have been associated with a double moat which lay roughly 600m to the south-east of the house. It was recommended that a further watching brief should be carried out during the excavation of foundations for the new buildings. [AIP]
