Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning permission for the construction of a new Church Room. It was clear from the SMR record that the archaeological potential of the area was moderately high, due to both the quantity and variety of material recovered in the vicinity. Prehistoric evidence ranged from Neolithic flint axes to Late Iron Age coins; and evidence of subsequent Roman activity locally was supported by the discovery of burials, and further afield by the remains of the villa site at Titsey and the Roman road. The manor of Limpsfield was listed as possessing a church in Domesday Book, however, the lack of architectural features dating to this period, suggested that the earlier building was completely replaced by the existing 12th century structure.
