Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that ten sites of archaeological interest had been recorded within a 1km radius of the site. These included the findspots of two Palaeolithic handaxes, Mesolithic material and a Neolithic end scraper, and the sites of an Iron Age banjo enclosure, a Roman villa and the 12th-14th century manor of Preston. Two Corporation of London tax posts also lay in the area. The proposal site had largely escaped development to an extent where any archaeological evidence which may have existed woud have been destroyed. It was concluded that the site had a moderate archaeological potential, and that trial trenching should be carried out. [AIP] |
