Abstract: |
Further geophysical survey was carried out at Rougham Farm in an effort to locate subsoil features of archaeological interest beneath ground E of the area previously explored. The survey again employed a portable fluxgate gradiometer to detect anomalies in soil magnetic susceptibility and any targets with thermoremnant magnetism. The main features detected by the geophysical survey comprised a set of positive magnetic lineations (in both fields examined), which did not appear to respect the topographic contours. Hence, these geophysical anomalies were thought unlikely to reflect land drains and may have indicated a set of field ditches or some other form of enclosure. Several dense concentrations of magnetic dipoles were found by the geophysical survey and provided evidence for areas of brick and iron debris which may have been of geotechnical interest during construction of the factory and associated services.
