Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a proposed development site which lay adjacent to Reigate Castle was undertaken. Only a small number of pre-medieval sites had been recorded in the surrounding area. Archaeological and documentary evidence relating to Reigate itself indicated that it had been a planned new town in the late 12th century, replacing an earlier settlement known as Cherchefelle. It was all but certain that the proposal site lay outside the bailey of the castle, to the east of the medieval town, and to the west of Cherchefelle. It was concluded that, although the site lay close to areas of archaeological importance, its potential for archaeological remains was low to moderate. It was recommneded that a watching brief should be undertaken on any areas of major ground disturbance associated with the development. [AIP] |
