Abstract: |
The proposed development area formed part of the property occupied by the Dun Cow Inn, which lies on the main road in a prime location in the centre of medieval Dunchurch. Archaeological evaluation trenches revealed evidence of activity dating from the 12th/13th century onwards in the form of a ditch and gullies in Trench 1, and a small quantity of residual medieval pottery. However, all the dated features in the other trenches were post-medieval or later. The absence of any medieval structural features and the very small quantities of medieval material found in the trenches make it clear that the development area was not built up in the medieval period. It is likely that medieval occupation was always concentrated at the south end of the property on the main road frontage, and that this part of the plot was mainly used as gardens. The area seems to have continued in use as gardens through the post-medieval period into the 18th and 19th centuries, as shown by the early map evidence.[AIP] |
