Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of a rear extension to four properties. The evaluation characterised the archaeological potential of the site and revealed metalled surfaces within trenches 1 to 4 inclusive and ditches partially exposed within trenches 1 and 4. This correlated closely with the projected line of Street I separating insulae XIX and XXA of the Roman town of Corinium. The street metalling survived and potential Roman structural remains were located fronting the north-eastern side of the Roman Street. Late Roman structural remains were sealed by variable depths of post-Roman soil. These homogenous 'dark earth' deposits were likely to have developed from the late/post-Roman period onwards but had been extensively reworked during the post-medieval period. A single deposit containing solely 12th to 15th century pottery was noted which may have identified medieval quarrying/robbing of Roman deposits for reusable building materials. [Au(adp)]
