Abstract: |
Seventeen trenches were excavated. The trenches immediately adjacent to Cheviot House contained the densest concentration of features. These consisted mainly of stone wall foundations with areas of paving in two of the trenches. Large spreads of rubble and associated medieval pottery were found with these structures. To the north of Cheviot House, stratified demolition deposits were encountered, including mortar and rubble deposits and layers rich in charcoal, bone and medieval pottery. A shallow ditch containing Medieval pottery may represent the southern boundary of the site. Further wall footings were found in other trenches, suggesting the settlement extends to cover the south-eastern half of the site. The structures may represent the remains of the abandoned village of Bodington. A number of otherwise undated features containing worked and burnt flint may point to Prehistoric activity in the area.
