Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for construction work identified that no pre-medieval sites had been recorded in the immediate vicinity, although a small number had been recorded in the general surrounding area. Mesolithic flintwork had been found to the south and west, and a Roman tile production centre had lain c. 0.5km to the south-west. The town of Reigate had originated as a planned new town in the late 12th century, replacing an earlier settlement to the east. The Grammar School had already been in existence by the time of the OS map of 1870, and buildings had been present on the proposal site. It was concluded that the site had a low to moderate archaeological potential. However, it was recommended that a watching brief should be maintained within areas of major ground disturbance associated with the development, as even negative evidence would help to confirm the present understanding of the early development of Reigate.
