Abstract: |
The archaeological evaluation of the proposed development site involved the recording of five machine-excavated trenches. In all cases there was deep infilling and building disturbance of fairly recent date. Below these deposits were horizons of peat and clay, with the earliest containing a single sherd of medieval pottery. No associated archaeological features were within these layers. It was considered likely that the area was formerly marshland subsequently infilled during the later (post-medieval) expansion of the town. [Au] |
