Abstract: |
In September 1993, a trial trench (Trench K) was excavated to the west of Caesar's Tower in an attempt to locate the brewhouse shown on the c.1600 plan of the Castle by Robert Smythson. It was hoped that sufficient of the foundations of the building would survive for its north west end to be excavated and displayed to the public. The Smythson plan was sufficiently accurate to locate the building to within 0.2m or so. In the event, the trench showed that the foundations of the brewhouse had been completely robbed out when it was demolished. The demolition rubble did, however, provide information on the character of its roof, as well as the structure of the ovens within the building. At a lower level the corner of a 13th/14th century courtyard building was revealed, cutting a layer which might represent the spread out remains of the original earth rampart of the castle. Although it had been assumed that buildings pre-dating the surviving 14th century domestic range must have\nexisted, this investigation provided the first definite archaeological evidence.[AIP] |
