Abstract: |
Monitoring of petrol tanks, insertion of pilings, and perimeter trench excavation revealed natural deposits of London Clay, terrace gravels, alluvial silt, and peat deposits. The spatial arrangement of the alluvial silt strongly suggested that the edge of a proposed palaeo-channel beneath Long Lane ran northwest to southeast across the site. Trenches in the western half of the site indicated that it had been truncated by modern features to an approximate depth of 3m, below which there were only natural deposits. Work on the eastern half of the site was limited to one shallow trench, in which stratified post-medieval deposits were observed. Pottery recorded during works was largely unstratified and consisted primarily of post-medieval and some medieval sherds. [Au] |
