Abstract: |
Two archaeological evaluation trenches and two areas of full excavation were examined. At the western end of the site, archaeological deposits will be preserved beneath sympathetic landscaping, whereas to the east, redevelopment of the theatre frontage will result in their removal. Trench 1 revealed a sequence of 18th century floor surfaces which had been established over an earlier pit. Trench 2 was dominated by a mid-16th century pit containing high status pottery, while trenches 3 and 4 were characrerised by extensive pits which had been rapidly infilled. These pits contained a large quantity of domestic refuse that enabled a 18th century date to be confirmed. [Au(abr)] |
