Abstract: |
The archaeological evaluation (four trial trenches) failed to find the medieval conduit, the conduit house or the drain or culvert thought to lie within the Square. It did uncover archaeological features and deposits of medieval date consisting of a paved stone surface, pits and occupation layers. Post-medieval path surfaces and layers of dumped material were recorded. The composition of the central mound was identified. Due to the depth of the medieval features and deposits and the 18th century paths below the present ground level it was considered unlikely that any landscaping, re-surfacing or other superficial alterations to the Square would cause damage to the archaeological resource.
