Abstract: |
The assessment highlighted the possibility that archaeological remains of Romano-British or prehistoric activity survived on the site. There was direct evidence of Iron Age and Romano-British activity, and indirect evidence of Bronze Age, Neolithic or Mesolithic activity, in the vicinity. Documentary sources suggested that the development site was adjacent to the remains of a complex medieval site of national importance. These remains included a priory, church and stone-built castle of probable 12th and 13th century date, and a possible earlier timber castle further to the east. A later medieval settlement seemed to have existed around the former castle site. The site almost certainly contained remains, which would have proved crucial in the interpretation of the development of this complex and its environs. [Au(abr)] |
