Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken of the site prior to its proposed residential redevelopment. It was considered likely that important medieval remains would have survived on the site. The Domesday Survey of 1086 had listed a corn mill, which was likely to have been located in or close to the proposed development. The mill continued to be used throughout the medieval period, by the middle of the 16th century there were also two fulling mills nearby. These were likely to have been associated with ancillary buildings. The earliest maps to showed a significant level of detail dated to the 18th century. By this time there were certainly buildings in the southern part of the development area, which was otherwise sub-divided into gardens and meadows. The foundations of these structures and evidence of contemporary land-use would certainly be encountered on the site. [Au(abr)] |
