Abstract: |
A desk top assessment of the proposed site of a residential development, occupied by a fire-damaged 18th-19th century mill, was undertaken. A mill may have been present at the site since the 11th century. Settlement dating from the Neolithic to Roman times had been recorded in the surrounding area, including two oppida. A Scheduled Ancient Monument comprising a Roman villa and associated occupation lay 4-500m to the south. The area had remained largely rural during medieval times. It was concluded that the remains of a medieval mill could survive at the site. [AIP] |
