Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken of the proposed site of a linking building between an existing church and church hall. The church itself possessed some 13th century features, although the structure had been rebuit in 1680, after a fire. The building and three nearby tombs were Grade II Listed. In the surrounding area, a possible Roman road and the site of a mill were known, and a number of findspots had been recorded. Artefacts found comprised Mesolithic fllints, a possibly Iron Age spearhead, and medieval and post-medieval coins and pottery. Two grave slabs lay within the proposed development area. These and the burials marked by them were to be moved prior to development. It was concluded that the archaeological potential of the site was moderate to low. It was recommended that stripping of the upper layers of soil at the site should be archaeologically supervised, and that a watching brief should be undertaken during the re-location of the two burials and during creation of access roads.
