Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of new buildings at a school and a proposed residential development site at the school's nearby playing fields revealed that a royal park and a medieval moated manor house had lain in the surrounding area. The exact location of the moated manor, Stoughton Place, was not known, although a remnant of a moat close to the later site of the school was marked on a map of 1840. It was concluded that it would be prudent to regard both of the proposal sites as being of high archaeological potential in respect of the manor. Trial trenching of both was recommended. [AIP] |
