Abstract:
Archaeological observation at St. Peter's Church, Whatcote, during the excavation of a new service trench, revealed two stone foundations located close to the porch, on the south side of the church. One may have been associated with the foundations of the existing 15th century porch or with an earlier porch. The other less solid foundation, may have been a tomb base. The trench cut through numerous graves, probably mostly post-medieval in date. Three sherds of 12th to 13 century pottery were recovered from the spoil heaps along with five sherds dating from 18th to 19th centuries. Several small fragments of ceramic roof tile and a few larger pieces of stone roof tile were also found on the spoil heaps. These were probably from earlier parts of the church roof and both types could be medieval in origin. [Au]
