Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on the site of an ongoing mine water treatment works. To the south of the site, a dense packed scatter of stones initially thought to have been part of the Maiden Way was investigated, but this was subsequently interpreted as stone backfilling or demolition deposits associated with construction and use of the adjacent railway line. Archaeological monitoring work to the north in the valley of Tipalt Burn revealed only a single feature, a shallow ditch or gully interpreted as a post-medieval drainage or boundary ditch. This feature cut a thick sequence of alluvial silts and sands deposited by the Tipalt, which may have buried earlier features, so the absence of the road at this point was not particularly surprising. A cambered earthwork 5-8m wide and respected by ridge and furrow cultivation, could clearly be seen just to the north of the development area. This feature probably represented the Maiden Way, which confirmed that the road did cross the site at approximately this point, though on a different alignment to that shown on existing mapping.
