Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a care/therapy unit and a residential block identified that several prehistoric artefacts had been found in the surrounding area, including two Palaeolithic handaxes, 18 Mesolithic flints and a Neolithic scraper. A Bronze Age barrow and a possible barrow had been recorded, and a further mound could have been either a barrow or an earthwork associated with a nearby medieval site. The 12th-14th century manor of Preston had lain to the north of the development area, and a Grade I Listed Building of 17th century date lay nearby, to the east. It was concluded that the site had a moderate archaeological potential, and that the proposed development would destroy most of the potential archaeological deposits. Trial trenching was recommended.
