Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to redevelopment. The site was located within the historic core of the town, which had grown up around the abbey from the late Saxon period. The desk-based assessment indicated the possibility of archaeology from the Saxon period. Trench 3, located on the higher ground, revealed a medieval pit. Alluvial clays and peat suggested the site would have been predominantly wet during the medieval period. The deep recent overburden represented building demolition debris which served to raise the level of the site. The Fenland Survey noted that during the Bronze Age the site of modern Ramsey was set on a large 'island' above the fen and that by the medieval period, peat deposits were encroaching into the area of the town from the north and east. This suggested that any peat deposition within the site would have been of a late date. The evaluation supported this reasoning, as the layers directly overlying the peat contained 12th-14th century pottery. While the peat was well preserved, the deposits were thin and relatively recent. [Au(abr)] |
