Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of redevelopment. On the basis of the available evidence it appeared that the assessment site had little potential for remains pre-dating the probable late medieval origins of settlement at Borehamwood. No significant prehistoric monuments or finds were recorded in the vicinity, and the site was peripheral to the known focus of Roman and medieval activity around Elstree and Watling Street. Prior to the recorded appearance of Barham Pound hamlet in the 17th century the assessment area was probably common land and possibly quite heavily wooded. Historic cartographic evidence indicated that the site was open agricultural land until the construction of Whitehall Studios in 1928. [Au(abr)]
