Abstract: |
The geophysical surveys were undertaken as part of a Heritage Open Day organised by Swindon Borough Council. Resistance surveys at 1m and 0.5m around Holy Rood church revealed anomalies that related to former wall foundations and rubble associated with the demolition of the majority of the church in 1852 and a possible more recent boundary or wall. A resistance survey of the Lawn Manor house to the north of Holy Rood church revealed some linear anomalies that may have related to the outer walls of the building, although high resistance areas within the interior showed that demolition rubble may fill the basement level. A detailed magnetic survey within the area of parkland to the north-west of the church located widespread magnetic debris that suggested dumped material, linear anomalies may have been obscured by this debris.
