Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment established that no standing earthworks were visible within the area proposed for a motorway service station development. Three known sites, recorded as being within the vicinity of the proposal area, but for which a precise location was not known, comprised a possible sites of a 14th century mill, a coal pit , and a Holy Well. Cartographic evidence indicated that the fields within the study area were enclosed at a later date than those closer to the settlement of Tibshelf itself, and presumably were common land prior to enclosure. The north-end of the study area was found to have been destroyed by opencast mining and was partially covered by a slag heap. A railway which used to service a colliery to the south cut across the middle of the development area and an artifical reservoir was located at the south end. A row of miners cottages were recorded as being located in the southern tip of the study area although nothing visible of these remained. [Au(abr)] |
