Abstract: |
An evaluation carried out at the proposed site of a garage and an extension to a church revealed that the site had undergone considerable disturbance in the past, and that the original soil profile had been removed. A mixed layer of soil and tile/brick fragments, present in all of the excavated trenches, represented a period of levelling or landscaping in the 19th century. A garden wall was noted, and a brick and gravel layer was observed within two of the trenches. This may have represented a surface over which the levellng or landscaping had taken place, or could have represented the initial phase of levelling. It was recommended that no further archaeological work should be carried out. [AIP] |
