Abstract:		 Excavation was undertaken of a post-medieval cemetery and the western half of the medieval Cathedral church in relation to The Phoenix Initiative Redevelopment. The excavation revealed evidence for the following phases: Phase 1: a middle-late Saxon burial and Minster Church (c870-c.1043) Phase 2:The fortification of the Priory (1144); Phase 3: The western half of the Cathedral Church of St Mary (c1150-1539); Phase 4: The dissolution and after (1539-c1650); Phase 5: Early post-medieval (c.1650-1776); Phase 6: The churchyard (1776-1890/1975). Large blocks of cemetery deposits were left unexcavated as required in the brief with the potential to contained up to perhaps 200 further articulated skeletons. It was likely that the plot contained at least 2500 inhumations, of which c1855 have been excavated and recorded as above, a further 200 which remain in situ with the remainder being removed by unmonitored earth-moving between 1850 and 1975.
