Abstract:
The site did not lie within an Area of Archaeological Importance and did not contain any Listed Buildings or SAMs. There were a number of entries within the SMR within the vicinity of the site, although there were none within the site boundary. The proposed scheme of development involved the construction of a number of houses around the south and west perimeters of the site. The buildings would not have basements, however, they would have a substantial impact on the ground which had previously remained undisturbed. A road was to be constructed to the south of the site to serve the houses and the remaining land to the north would be used as a public park. The construction of the road and the landscaping of the park would also cause some disturbance of the ground. The site was situated on the eastern edge or just east of Oatlands Park and estates from the 17th century until the fields were enclosed in the 19th century. The site remained as fields until the early 20th century when it became the cricket ground. As the site had suffered very little disturbance and based on other archaeological finds it was recommended that a sample archaeological evaluation be conducted within the footprints of the proposed houses to discern the presence or absence of any archaeological deposits.
