Abstract: |
<summary>Building recording of the exterior fabric was carried out at St Nicholas' Church, Warndon, in advance of restoration works. This involved the photographic survey of all external walls following the removal of the external rendering, and sampling of the various mortars used in the building. A particularly interesting single-celled church, it has a combination of architectural elements datable to the 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th centuries; moreover, it did not suffer a damaging restoration in the Victorian period. Its decorated medieval floor tiles (of the Malvern School) and medieval stained glass are of note. The survey helped to identify a number of previously unsuspected elements, and clarified much of the structural history of the church. However, the relationship of an "enigmatic" doorway in the east wall to buried features further to the east (identified by geophysical survey) remains to be investigated; it is possible that these may relate to an earlier structure/settlement on the site. {italon}Au{italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} HWCM388 |
