Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a housing development. The grubbing out of previous house foundations was also observed, and the landscape was surveyed. The site lay within a Local Area of Archaeological Importance, and was situated immediately to the south of Southapton Common, which was probably Saxon in origin. Prehistoric artefacts, including Palaeolithic handaxes, a Mesolithic axe and Bronze Age axes, had been found in the southern part of the common, and a brick kiln of probable 18th century date had been observed nearby. During the evaluation, modern and undated features were recorded and artefacts of prehistoric, medieval, post-medieval and modern date were recovered from deposits of uncertain date and unstratified contexts. Some of the features may have been of natural origin, although one linear feature may have been of prehistoric date. The artefacts and features were consistent with agricultural use of the area from the medieval period to the end of the 19th century. [AIP]
