Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development. A number of archaeological findspots had been recorded in the surrounding area, with artefacts ranging from prehistoric flint implements to medieval coins; the area was of particular interest for its Palaeolithic finds. During the evaluation, a large pit containing pieces of cinder, slag, tile and land drain, interpreted as a modern agricultural rubbish pit, was revealed. An oval feature which was probably of natural origin and a small circular hollow containing a fragment of flint from a broken Mesolithic blade were also recorded. It was concluded that the absence of significant archaeological remains suggested that past occupation of the site had been minimal, and that the proposed development would therefore be unlikely to damage the archaeological resource.
