Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed re-development of the site including a new by-pass for the town, a new business park and residential development. The proposed development area lay to the east of Silsden and was used for pastoral activity and contained no obvious field monuments or earthworks. Examination of the cartographic and historic sources indicated that the proposed development area was used for agricultural purposes in the medieval and post-medieval periods. The field examination of the proposed development site revealed that the 1610 map was actually an accurate representation of the landscape around Silsden. The area of the village of Swartha as marked on the 1610 map is now occupied by an area of parkland associated with an 18th/19th century elite landscape. There was therefore the possibility of the medieval and post-medieval remains of the village of Swartha being encountered. The development would also impact upon the 18th/19th century parkland presently in this area. Within the fields east of Silsden within the development area there were a number of post-medieval agricultural buildings associated with the enclosure of the field system. The development would have a potential impact on these buildings. The lack of evidence for Roman settlement in the area of Silsden from the SMR could not be taken to mean a lack of settlement, but simply a lack of archaeological research to identify such a settlement. Therefore the possibility of the identification of Romano-British remains in the area of the proposed development could not be discounted. There was significant prehistoric activity to the north of Silsden and on the adjacent moorlands. The nature of prehistoric exploitation in this area was difficult to predict but it was possible that it was dominated by pastoral activity on the clay soils and exploitation of the lower alluvial floodplain. Archaeological remains from the prehistoric periods were therefore possible on the development site. [Au(abr)] |
