Abstract: |
An assessment of archaeological potential was undertaken in support of an application to redevelop the site. The site was not within a Conservation Area, did not include Listed Buildings or SAMs. All the properties had been subjected to archaeological investigations and the area was well documented. Roman streets and houses and medieval pits and cellars were known to have survived. Modern basements had generally been cut down to Roman levels, with about 1m depth of archaeology surviving beneath most. Archaeological levels were also pierced by a series of pad and pile foundations which had resulted in removal of 25% of archaeological deposits, but it was estimated that some 4,400m3 of deposits survived. The creation of Russia Court probably resulted in the preservation of deeper, largely complete, archaeological sequences and was being retained, as was the adjoining 2-4 Trump Street, which probably also had intact remains. The recent archaeological and geotechnical investigation of Mumford Court revealed the excavations for building had truncated the archaeological sequences beneath the roadway created in the 1950's. The report concluded that sufficient information was now available for the planning application to be determined without further evaluation. It was suggested that the archaeological sequences on Russia Court and 2-4 Russia Row, plus a properly supported level of archaeological excavation elsewhere, would meet the principle objectives set out in relevant plan policies.
