Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, involving desktop survey and trial-trenching was carried out to the rear of the standing buildings at 44-50 High Street. The standing buildings were timber framed and pre-dated the earliest cartographic evidence. Early maps also showed a range of buildings within the area to be excavated which were no longer standing. The footings of these buildings, one of which was cellared, were visible in the trial-trench. Other features relating to post-medieval settlement on the site were also revealed. A single sherd of medieval coarseware was recovered from the upcast soil. [AIP] |
