Abstract:
The Environmental Impact Assessment found an uncertain (possibly low) potential for the presence of prehistoric, Roman and early medieval archaeology within the area of proposed development. The area was likely to have been wooded during these periods, although there may have been clearings for settlement. The area of proposed development appeared to be located at the periphery of two Domesday manors and was unlikely to have been a focus of settlement. By the later medieval period the woodland was being cleared piecemeal for arable cultivation. Settlement in the later medieval period was probably similar to that in the post-medieval period with occupation of the higher ground above Low Brook valley, rather than the valley itself where the area of proposed development was located. The proposed development would have a direct impact on five known archaeological sites. These comprised a post-medieval (possibly earlier) road, two small areas of poorly preserved medieval ridge and furrow earthworks and features marking the line of a later medieval (possibly early medieval) manorial boundary. The sites were all Low Sensitivity Receptors (local or lesser archaeological importance). The proposed development would have one indirect impact. This was the demolition of 1960s buildings attached to the Elmdon 130s Terminal Building. The removal of these buildings would constitute a beneficial effect on the historic setting of the Elmdon Building. Details of the nature of the proposed control tower to be constructed on the site of the demolished buildings were not available at the time of writing and were not assessed in this report; it was possible that the new building would have a detrimental affect on the setting of the Elmdon building and would negate the aforementioned beneficial effect.
