Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of foundation trenches for a new dwelling, at a site where an earlier evaluation had revealed a wide, east-west aligned ditch containing small quantities of medieval pottery. Evidence of a further four possible medieval ditches was observed during the watching brief. The most substantial of these, running north to south, was aligned with a nearby present-day boundary further to the south. Another east-west ditch continued the alignment of an existing boundary to the west. This suggested that many of the existing boundaries to the north of the High Street incorporated, or replaced, those of properties planned within the medieval town. Small quantities of pottery were recovered from most of the ditches, indicating that they fell out of use between the later 12th-14th centuries. There were no features present which suggested a former structure having lain in this zone of the site, supporting a view that the ditches represented the rear property boundaries of a building likely to have been located alongside the High Street frontage.
