Abstract:
An excavation was carried out to the north of Euxton House Farm to establish whether an early farmhouse had existed on the site. The earliest documented buildings on the site were recorded between 1515 and 1530. The original farmhouse was dismantled around 1730 and was rebuilt using stone but re-using many of the original oak beams in the floors and ceilings. For a period following the rebuild the farmhouse was used as a tannery. The excavation revealed no evidence for early structures and the earliest identified remains consisted of a large back-filled ditch, which although of uncertain date, began to fill in the 18th or 19th centuries. Hurdling was recovered from within the fill but was of relatively recent construction. Evidence for several outbuildings was discovered within the area. In the centre of the excavation the remains of a large corrugated iron shed and small building were located.. [Au(abr)]
