Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a parsonage within the grounds of a vicarage. Parts of a medieval bishop's palace had been excavated c. 100m to the south during the early 20th century, but the full extent of the remains had not been established. During the evaluation, post holes, pits, intercutting ditches and a gully were recorded. Associated pottery dated the features to the 10th-14th centuries. Two or possibly three walls were also found. It was concluded that the site may have been related to the palace, or may have been part of a contemporary village. It was noted that the proposed development would have an adverse effect on the archaeological remains. [AIP] |
